When it comes to automotive paint protection you will have three options:

• Carnauba Wax
• Synthetic Paint Sealants (a.k.a. synthetic wax)
• Paint Coating Systems (Opti Coat)

Synthetic Sealants

Synthetic paint sealants are the most popular type of paint protection. It creates a very thin, invisible layer that will temporarily protect your car paintwork from UV rays and daily contamination.

Paint sealants also create an incredible shine and last longer than carnauba wax. Generally, paint sealants are made of synthetic particles known as polymers, acrylics, PTFE, nano sealants and others. These molecules bond together and create a transparent protective shell on top of your paintwork. Paint sealants protective effects will last for 3 months up to one year and that depends on the product, paint preparation before applying the product, washing method after applied, whether your car is kept undercover, climate, etc.

Menzerna Power Lock, Glare, Optimum Seal and 3M Performance Finish, not in any particular order are some examples of the best paint sealants, acclaimed by professional detailers all over the world.

Be careful!

When buying a car, most automotive dealerships will offer you a 'paint protection' application service. The price for these services usually range from $900 up to $2,500. Currently, all dealership paint protection products are very similar and fall under the Synthetic Sealant category. Some of these products require the use of special shampoos that contain the same sealing particles that were first applied to the vehicle, in an effort to make the product last longer.

Before buying any type of paint protection, we strongly suggest you to do your research. Don't fall for fancy names, "hi-tech" product descriptions and pushy sales people and their warranties. Google it! Look for valid reviews and happy customers. There are a few great paint protection options out there, it is just a matter of finding the best bang for your buck.

Coating Systems

Coating system is the newest, most advanced type of Paint Protection technology available.

The American Optimum brand is in the forefront of coating technologies. Optimum Opti-Coat is not a synthetic sealant type of paint protection nor a temporary coating solution. Opti-Coat is a clear coating formula - it's chemical structure is very similar to factory type clear coats.

Opti-Coat paint protection is a hard wearing, aftermarket clear coat for superior resistance to scratching and chemical etching from environmental impacts. Opti-Coat scratch resistance measures an incredible 9/10 on Mohs scale. It provides an outstanding permanent protection for all factory paints and can also be applied to plastic surfaces, including headlights.

A single layer of Optimum clear coat measures approximately 2 microns in thickness. Compared to other 'paint protection' sealants, Opti-Coat is more than 100 times thicker, with tests showing wax or paint sealant coating measuring less than 0.02 microns. This allows Opti-Coat to effectively absorb damage that would otherwise affect the factory paint layers. Even swirl marks, light scratches and chemical etching are decreased because the factory paint system is fully protected by the thicker, harder outer layer of Optimum Coating.

Opti Coat vs. Paint Sealants

Unlike paint protection sealants that degrade over time and can be easily removed through washing with water or chemicals, Opti-Coat does not degrade and cannot be removed by chemicals such as heavy duty truck wash, dishwashing liquid or even caustic degreasers. It is totally resistant to these chemicals and produces a permanent film that is chemically bonded with the factory paint layers. Opti-Coat is effectively the vehicles new outer clear coat. This quality makes Opti-Coat far more resistant to chemical etching than your typical paint protection sealant. The 2 micron layer provides a very hard and thick buffer between any damage and the factory paintwork.

In a side by side comparison test with sealants and waxes, Opti-Coat produced a very high level of shine. If correctly applied, Opti-Coat will create an incredible high-gloss surface and to top that all up Opti-coat is permanent.
