The truth about your average mechanical car wash - cheap car wash

The average mechanical car wash will damage your paintwork! The brushes of mechanical car washes are cleaning your car with other people's cars dirt!. They usually have spinning brushes that can pick up little rocks, sand, dirt and grime and hit your car during the wash creating scratches and micro scratches.

These thread-like scratches are often created in parallel lines and are particularly visible on darker colours. With time, the surface starts losing it's gloss and turns grey in shade.

Following extensive tests in a laboratory car-wash, Mercedes engineers noted that a large proportion of all paintwork scratches are caused by mechanical car washes. We are now talking about the average petrol station drive through car wash. Minute particles of hard materials, such as road dust, sand, grime and sometimes even rocks become lodged in the rotating brushes etching scratches into the paint surface. These “hair scratches” will damage any paintwork and are particularly noticeable in darker paint shades.

Commercial Hand Wash

Be very Careful, again!

Normally, hand wash brushes, mitts and chamois used on commercial hand wash are too coarse, too dirty and very worn out and there's a big chance that it will scratch the surface of your vehicle.

Hand car washes are generally safer. However you still have to ensure their employees have been trained how to best wash a car without instilling scratches. Many hand car washes will cut costs to increase profits, hiring unexperienced employees that do not understand car detailing basics , do not receive proper training and do not really care about your car. These employees often use old mitts, cloths and chamois that haven't been frequently cleaned or replaced.

As a standard rule, professional car detailers will immediately discard or wash with running water (or soak in a bucket of clean water) any wash mitts, cloths or chamois that have dropped to the ground. They should never be reused without extensive cleaning or replacement.

Also, you should remember that a too dry wash with insufficient water, cheap or inappropriate products (even dirty water) can damage your car paintwork. A scratched paintwork will affect the look of your car and reduce its re-sale value, not to mention the exposure to early rusting.
